Readings from Matthew

This gospel is the first in the New Testament, but it was probably the second to be written. Scholars recognize that it borrows material from Mark, and from a sayings source containing sayings of Jesus and known as Q (for Quelle, German for source). The author shows an understanding of Jewish culture and religion not found in the other gospels. It was probably written about 60 to 70 AD, possibly for a largely Jewish audience.

Pray for :

                                                                                                                                                                                           *   Pam and Max Oldmeadow, Geraldine Pritchard, and Jean Johnston and others who are not well. We were saddened to hear of the death of Fred Johnston and extend our prayers and sympathy to Jean at this time. Pray for our Moderator Isabel Thomas Dobson in her time of grief.

*   Courage of those who are not well, and that they and their doctors may be given wisdom to be able to discern appropriate treatment options.  The families of those who have died in the floods in Queensland and those who suffer because of the floods in Queensland, New South Wales and ¼ of Victoria and those yet to be effected like Swan Hill.

*   Pray that we will be a just people, following a just God, building a just world for all.

Three gospels in the New Testament offer similar portraits of the life of Jesus; Luke is the third of them. Its author, traditionally Luke the physician who accompanied Paul on some of his missionary journeys, draws on three sources: Mark), a collection of sayings (known as Q for Quelle, German for source) and his own source. It is a gospel that emphasizes God's love for the poor, the disadvantaged, minorities, outcasts, sinners and lepers. Women play a more prominentß part than in the other gospels. Luke never uses Semitic words; this is one argument for thinking that he wrote primarily for Gentiles.

PILGRIMAGE TO LIVING WATER.

Uniting Church communities around Australia are invited to design and lead pilgrimages during the season after Easter, or whenever it suits, next year. Identify a ‘living water’ source in your local landscape and use this resource to plan a pilgrimage to that place. Your pilgrimage could be as long or short as your community can manage. It could involve your presbytery, agency or congregation. A pilgrimage project could become an outreach, community networking or inter faith event involving others in your neighbourhood. This resource provides a framework for creating the pilgrimage and a process to attend to the inner journey using a set of liturgies along the way.

 RESIGNATION OF PRESBYTERY CHAIRPERSON.

The Standing Committee has received a letter of registration from the Rev Nicole Lourenz as Chair of the Presbyter for personal reasons. This is effective immediately, The Standing Committee has held a special  meeting and accepted Nicole’s resignation with regret and understanding, Standing Committee has made the following interim arrangements.  Best Loved Hymns for Service 12th September.

Church Council at it's meeting in July agreed to arrangements for the leadership of Sunday worship through September, as it is unlikely that a Supply Minister would have been appointed to the Trinity Congregation by that time.

Malcolm Kreltszheim will take the service on 12th September.  Malcolm will conduct a service of worship in song and he invites the congregation to vote for their two best-loved hymns, to be included in the service.

To that end, you will find a yellow slip of paper with your newssheet today.  Please write down the names of the two hymns you love best and place it in the box provided in the narthex by today,15th August.

As Far As You Can See.

I broke a glass in the kitchen

Dad sent me out for a broom

it was forty-five yards to the tool shed

on a pitch black night with no moon.

I tried not to let on I was frightened

but finally my dad understood

and he gave me an old-fashioned kerosene lantern that hardly did any good.

I can't see where I am going - how far can you see?

Just the trunk of the chestnut - then go to the tree.

I can't see where I am going - how far can you see?

Oh, it's just the old tractor - you're where you should be.

I can't see where I am going - it's just up ahead

Hey, it looks like the tool shed - then go to the tool shed.

you've got all the light you need, boy, so go, as far as you can see.

Dad had been gone for the summer

before I could let go of the tears;

See I'd gotten lost in the darkness again

and I desperately needed him here.

Now I talk to my Father in Heaven

'cause my daddy taught me this much:

"It's not about how much light you carry

if you know whose voice you can trust."

I can't see where I am going - how far can you see?

Just a job in the mail room - it's the road to your dreams.

I can't see where I'm going - how far can you see?

I just can't live without her - tell her everything

I can't see where I'm going - oh, it's just up ahead

Hey, it looks like my moment - then go seize the moment

You've got all the light you need, boy,

so - go as far as you can

Go as far as you can go.

As far as you can see.
