HISTORY
Scots Presbyterian
Church 1854 - 1977 Services of worship
commenced in Dandenong
in 1854 led by the Revd. Alexander Duff. A brick church
was erected and opened in March
1887 continuing to be a centre of Christian life
and witness until its closure in 1978 when
the congregation joined its brothers
and sisters to worship at Scott Street.
Methodist Church
1855-1977 Although worship services
were commenced on 17th March
1856 in the original church, services were held in
a blacksmith's shop and a tent dating back
to 1855. As the congregation grew in
strength, so did the range of buildings or the site to
accommodate the various
activities associated with parish life. A large brick church was built
in 1887
is still in use.
Uniting Church in
Australia Inaugurated in June 1977 At
Union, June 1977, the
Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in Dandenong became
part of the Uniting Church
beginning new era in ministry. The years have been
witness to many changes in the nature
of the Church. When the two churches
joined as one worshipping community its activities
began to centre around the
present site. With the growth of Dandenong from a market town
to a thriving,
bustling city, many new and different challenges faced the Church. Out of this
has grown a vibrant cross-cultural Church comprising people of many different
nationalities.
Flags representing the backgrounds of people worshipping on this
site are displayed in the narthex.
